During the 1960s， Satish Kumar and a companion made a two and
a half year walk for peace from his home country of India through
Pakistan， Afghanistan， Iran， the Soviet Union， Poland， East and
West Germany， Belgium， France， England， and America. They car-
ried no money on this 8000 mile walk， depending totally on the
hospitality and goodwill of the people of each country. The story
of this marathon walk is told in his book， No Destination. Satish
was offered an award from the Soviet Union for the book， but he
declined it， saying that Russia must first release dissident writers
who are imprisoned.
Satish entered into the religious life as a 9-year-old boy when he
became a monk in the Jain religion. This is a religion in India
famous for its respect and total dedication to uphold and protect
all sentient life from pain. By the time he was 18 years old， he had
decided to combine spiritual practices with social action; he left
the monkhood and joined the Gandhian movement under Vinoba
Bhave.
Satish joined Vinoba in persuading landlords to donate land to
the landless--the aim of which was to establish a peaceful economic
revolution. After some time， Vinoba encouraged Satish and his
friend to make the long walk for peace.
In 1968 Satish was invited to England by Christian Aid to estab-
lish and direct the London School of Non-Violence. He taught
courses in non-violent action， sustainable economics and develop-
ment in the Third World. During this period he became a close
friend of Dr E. F. Schumacher， a founding father of the Green
