Unfortunately， her characters are as insubstantial as the netherworld she invokes. Although LeClaire ( Every Mother's Son ， Bantam， 1985) poses some easily answered questions， she also tells a good story， and a passionate romance between two characters generates enough interest to keep readers hooked until the final twists.
