We had the top down and were driving through the<br >arid terrain tilat leads from California s Clear Lake south<br >to what the local natives call the wine country of the Napa<br >Valley in northern California.<br > It was August lO， x97o， our seventh wedding anniversary--<br >Donna s and mine. A happy day， filled with pleasant memo-<br >ries and the anticipation of many good years to come. After<br >all， we were young， fairly prosperous， and on the way up.<br >We did the same things other young couples in our financial<br >bracket did. We owned our own home in the suburbs， had<br >two cars， a dog， and two children.<br > We were relaxed after four days of vacationing together，<br >and feeling rather smug that day.
