It began, for the police, in Salt Lake City on a swel-
tering Sunday morning, the 23rd o| July, 1978.
Summoned 1o a warehouse in a deserted area of
town, they found Franklin Bradshaw--seventy-six,
auto-parts magnate, one of the largest holders of
federal oil and gas leases in the country-lying
dead ne~t to a cash register, shot twice at dose range.
But this riveting story began long before the day
of the murder-and the years of detective work
that went into solving it. It began when Bradshaw
met Berenice Jewett at the University of Utah and
they eloped on Halloween Day in 1924. IIe was the
ambitious son of a Mormon pioneer, a product of
the Depression, a man who started out with a nut,
a bdlt and a dream, worked every day of the year,
and became a multimillionaire-- using a Coors beer
carton for a briefcase and carrying money in his
shoe. She was a brown-haired, blue-eyed knockout
from Iowa, a "nonbeliever" whose family roamed
America like a hand of gypsies. She liked him
because he was serious. He liked her because she
