To people before the seventeenth cen-
tury, the earth was the center of all things -
the hub around which revolved the sun,
moon, stars, and planets. This geocentric,
or "earth centered," theory has since been
abandoned. We know now that the earth is
a small planet and that it and its sister plan-
ets orbit a star called the sun. We know,
too, that the sun is one of thousands of mil-
lions~ of stars in the "island universe"
known as the Milky Way galaxy. This gal-
axy, in turn, is only one of thousands of mil-
lions of "island universes." Obviously,
then, our planet is only an insignificant
speck in the universe and not its center.
Yet, tiny though it is, the earth is of su-
preme importance to us humans, for it is
our home in space.
