The guiding force of a free enterprise system is
the sum total of the millions of individual deci-
sions all of us make as consumers, workers, and
citizens. The preservation of this kind of system
depends on the ability of individuals to make
wise economic decisions. For everyone living in
a free enterprise system, therefore, economic
understanding is an imperative need. Aware-
ness of this need is apparent in the growing
number of courses or units of instruction being
mandated by legislatures or by school boards.
These include various kinds of economic educa-
tion such as American free enterprise, con-
sumer education, personal finance, and worker
or career education. The result ill lnany cases is
that stfidents are getting bits or pieces of in-
struction from a number Of sources--a hard
way to learn, with results uncertain at best.
Business and You as a Consumer, Worker,
and Citizen, fifth edition, is tile text that puts it
all together for the student. It explains/he role
and purpose of business in our economic sys-
tem, with emphasis on what everyone should
know to function effectively as a consumer, a
worker, and a citizen in a free enterprise sys-
tem. Thus it is a text for all students, not just
those majoring in business.
