Great ideas don t just appear in a single stroke. No.
They nestle and settle in the mind, growing layer by
layer. Then one day there comes a final cause to make
the Great Idea explode in all its brilliance. That s how
it was for Conte Mark.
It happened while Conte was walking home from the
Freshman Orientation Meeting. The germ of the idea
grew quickly, fed by his surging anger. He was angry at
that character, Kurt Zelinkowitz. He was mad at the
Comminger Catalogue Company, at the high school
counselor, and maddest of all at Kirkland Corporation.
K.C., as they called it at home, had simply given his
father notice last May. He wasn t needed anymore. So
they had had to get out of Texas, pack up and move to
the town of Vista Mar in California.
