Nowhere in the voluminous writings of
Kahlil Gibran are his magnificent descrip-
tive powers and penetrating vision better
exemplified than in these eleven selections,
in each of which resides in metaphor cures
for "the gaping wounds in the side of
society."
Written some years before his death in
1931, these stories give proof to the clarity
of his perception, containing as they do
ominous warnings of the grave and unseen
dangers that have since visited our world
of intrigue, conflict, and maladjustment.
But these warnings are not confined to
doom and condemnation--"The Beloved
Master" muses over the beautiful, and his
criticisms are liberally blended with gentle
strokes of melancholy and profound under-
standing.
Gibran s vast horde of followers constitute
a religious cult in their appreciation of his
spiritual insight; while these selections lay
bare his views of the church as more denun-
ciatory than complimentary, his love for its
teachings and anger over its methods are
clearly shown. This selection from his many
writings shows clearly that Gibran had long
ago reached a spiritual plane far above rote,
law and doctrine.
