The Eastern Shore or Delmarva is a long peninsula lying between the

Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Stretching from Cecil and New;

Castle counties in the north, the region follows the Chesapeake Bay southl~

to form a diamond of tidewater counties shaped over the millennia by the

sand deposits of the Susquehanna River. Three states, Delaware, Mary.

land, and Virginia, have sovereignty on the Eastern Shore, and the name

Delmarva (as the region is popularly referred to) testifies to the social

allegiance of its inhabitants.

Until recently the Eastern Shore was isolated from the commercial

and metropolitan mainstream of Washington, Baltimore, and Wilmington,

On Delmarva look to the water. It is a region defined by the Chesa-

peake Bay and numerous exquisitely beautiful tidal rivers. Its creeks and i

snug harbors have provided a livelihood for Chesapeake oystermen and

fisher folk since the days of Captain John Smith in the seventeenth cen-

tury. The region today is a sailor s delight, and cyclists on the Eastern

Shore will see watercraft as diverse as giant oil tankers and Chesapeake

Bay skipjacks (oyster-dredging sail boats built over a hundred years ago).

Most of Delmarva is flat coastal plain, making cycling on the peninsula

an easy ride. South of the Choptank River in Maryland, the countryside is

as flat as a pancake. The northern part of the Delmarva Peninsula consists

of flat stretches interspersed with gently rolling hills. The most significant

obstacle to cyclists on the Eastern Shore is variable winds, especially those

out of the south, which can be especially frustrating to the inexperienced

cyclist.
