HISTORICALLY SPEAKING, THE POSTER is a neff invention. Its beginnings--and, as will be
seen, its endings--are bound up with the evolution of the major visual technologies. It is
with the advent of printing, earliest of the techniques of multiple production, that we
must identify the poster s origins.
To go back, as some have done, into the mists of time, to the trade signs on the walls
at Pompeii, to Egyptian hieroglyphics and even to the cave paintings of Altamira, is
to take too long and academic a run at it altogether. The poster, at once a product and
an instrument of the consumer society, is a child of our own time; it begins not with
the Trajan column but with Gutenberg, Caxton and the rest.
Before the advent of printing, though the poster may have been a gleam in man s eye,
it remained a gleam unrealised. The concept--of an item multiply produced, a separate
item fixed to a wall for public view--required the development of the technique of
graphic reproduction. By definition (it may be said without unduly begging the ques-
tion) the poster is a reproduction.
The matter has been expressed elsewhere: The twentieth-century connoisseur lays
down clear-cut rules as to what is and what is not a poster. Firstly, says the connoisseur,
the poster is a separate sheet, affixed to an existing surface (as opposed to those mark-
ings and images rendered directly on the surface). Secondly, it must embody a message;
a mere decorative image is not enough. Thirdly, it must be publicly displayed. Finally, it
must have been multiply produced; a single hand-done notice is not a poster within
the meaning of the Act... **A must-have book for anybody with even the most rudimentary appreciation of graphic design.
*Very popular study of a classic medium.
This is a fascinating look at the medium of the poster in the current climate of competing electronic communication. Angharad Lewis, who writes for the UK magazine, Grafik, discusses the success or failure of the poster as a medium today against rival mediums such as email and the internet and asks, is the traditional accessibility of the public poster still relevant, when contrasted with the closely targeted audience of electronic media?
The history of the poster and contemporary approaches are discussed, as well as poster-specific graphics, illustration, photography and typography. More than 100 posters are presented, each with an illuminating discussion of problem, solution, background, budget and mechanical details.
A highly entertaining, contemporary and informative book about an enduring art form shown through full color examples.
