Who is this book for?

It is for all students whose native language is not English and who wish

TOEFL (Test of EngliSh as a Foreign Language).

What is TOEFL?

The TOEFL is a test which measures your ability to use the English language and

demonstrates your level of proficiency. The test is divided into three sections, each

section testing an important language skill:

Section 1: Listening Comprehension

This section tests your ability to understand spoken American English. All of the

questions in this section are recorded on a tape which you will listen to.

Part A: Short statements

Part B: Short conversations

Part C: Mini-talks and short lectures

Section total: 40 minutes 50 questions

Section 2: Structure and Written Expression

This section measures your ability to recognize language that is appropriate for stand-

ard written English. Your knowledge of English structures and grammar, use and

usage, word order and sentence structure will all be tested.

Part A: Incomplete sentences

Part B: Incorrect words or phrases

Section total: 25 minutes 40 questions

Section 3: Vocabulary and Reading Comprehension

This section measures your ability to understand different kinds of reading material

as well as testing your ability to understand the meaning and use of words.

Part A: Vocabulary

Part B: Reading Comprehension

Section total: 45 minutes 60 questions

Overall total: 110 minutes 150 questions

In addition to the TOEFL, it is also possible to take the Test of Written English (TWE)

which measures your ability to write clearly in standard English:

Test of Written English

Written essay: 30 minutes
