What do Greeks, Japanese and motorbikes all have in common? They are all entwined into this wonderful book of culture, grief and a little romance called The Spare Room by Kathryn Lomer.
Akira is a 21 year old Japanese student who is sent by his father to Australia to learn English. His home stay family, the Moffats, are not quite what he expected. I will give you a clue, think: a lighthouse, a Greek party, a teddy bear and an accident. Why are the parents always fighting? Why does the mum hate motorbikes and why does Angie hate Akira? As Akira finds out more about the Moffats he also finds out more about himself, his parents and the immense difference between Australian and Japanese culture.
I would recommend this book to teenagers and possibly adults interested in connecting with some of the issues faced by families regardless of culture.
