With commentary also supplied by Erickson and other Soviet experts, Laqueur, author of a recent volume on Gorbachev s Russia, The Long Road to Freedom: Russia and Glasnost ( LJ 4/1/89), offers thoughts and predictions about the Soviet Union in the 1990s. This is a risky business, Laqueur admits, noting that Western scholars ability to predict future Eastern European events has been unimpressive in the last 20 years. Chapters here look at likely trends in the national question, the army, economic reform, relations with China, and Soviet politics. This is a rather slight addition to the blizzard of Gorbachev-era books, and like so many other slim volumes on current Soviet affairs, it may be soon outdated. Not essential.
