Set in a great house that is as large as a
labyrinth or as small as a closet, with an
action that is as swift as a rocket or as still
as a snapshot, this novel explores through
the character of Walter, its narrator, a pe-
culiarly American brand of nihilism, derived
from the Calvinism of the American experi-
ence and heritage. Three generations of
Waiter s family are destroyed by their sense
of pre-eminence and their impractical dream
of an American Eden. And Walter, who re-
bels most against the dream of his father,
is not only destroyed, but destroys--the two
children of his brother, a crime that lies at
the heart of the story.
