Underlying the changing pace of Gordon
Weaver s stories is a recurring theme, an
attempt to answer the questions: Who am
I? Where am I ? His protagonists speak as
insiders, as in "Finch the Spastic Speaks,"
and as outsiders, as in "The Salesman from
Hong Kong." Some of the stories are
ironical and satirical; some are nostalgic;
and some are touched with fantasy. Still
others are painfully realistic. All are han-
dled with an artistry and a distinctiveness
that the reader will find engaging.
"Mr. Weaver is well on hisway to becom-
ing a major American author if these sto-
nes are any indication of his ability to work
in strange and almost uncharted waters.
His range is remarkably wide, and he
seems in total control of his material."--
James R. Frakes
