The year is 1939, the eve of war
in France. A troop of adolescents in the countryside of Touraine, led by the bold and beautiful Bertrand, play war games to test
their daring and chivalry.
Matching Bertrand in beauty is Maite, his cool,
remote girlfriend. The others, including the
narrator, bask in their leaders perfection but
cannot match them in courage, idealism, or
inventiveness. Like the children in Lord of the
Flies, the group assaults the boundaries be-
tween childhood and adulthood, games and
life, at Bertrand s summer retreat, Blue Island.
The next year, as the Nazi defeat of France
looms and more men are sent off to fight,
Bertrand s games become increasingly warlike.
The countryside fills with troops, Parisians
seeking shelter from the threatened capital, and
refugees from all over France. Contemptuous
of Frenchmen retreating and surrendering,
Bertrand prepares Blue Island to resist German
invasion with the help of his band. Though his
quixotic plan makes the others uneasy, he still
has the power to hypnotize them into following
him. When the Germans approach Blue Island,
reality bursts into the children s game with
shocking violence.
Blue Island is a remarkable portrait of child-
hood and war, of a once-proud country in the
tragicomic throes of dissolution, painted with
great compassion and intimacy.
