The west, especially Belgium, colonialists first discovered this fertile land and exploited its riches, leaving behind them a poor, chaotic country. The author tried, near desperately, to follow an expedition trail created by Stanley along Congo River from the east Congo to the west, only to find the country more despairing. A compelling narrative.
