作者是海牙国际法庭的法官. 他六岁的时候跟他的父母一起被送进波兰的犹太人隔离区. 四年中,进过两个劳动营,被关进Auschwitz. 一开始跟母亲分开,然后又跟父亲分开. 而最终活下来了. 二战结束后的一年多,又奇迹般地找到了失散三年多的母亲. 不是简单意义上的回忆录,因为年份都不是很清楚. 连作者自己都说,到了老年再来写,很多事情都记不准确. 可读这本书,就象是在听一个老人回忆儿时的事情,那样边想边讲.年代久远,可又那么真实.

虽然看过许多二战片子，知道集中营的故事，还是深深被这本回忆录震撼。一个六七岁的可爱男孩，在那样恐怖痛苦的环境下那样早早学会保护自己，努力逃避一次次的 death selection，……那些事情读起来完全无法想象会是一个本该还是无忧无虑天真活泼的小小孩子能够做到想到的，看看 mmdd，就是他们这个年龄啊！读到父母们为了能给孩子一线生机，用心良苦，不惜与孩子分开，每一次都不能忍住泪流……象纳粹这样疯狂的没有人性的行为，现代社会仍然存在，怎样才能人人反省深思，把那“本善”的人性保持下去呢？
