It took nearly four years of work to give birth to Roberto
Fumagalli's CUBA VA: a photographer's extraordinary journey into the heart
of the Revolución. Working alongside Roberto Chile, Castro's personal cameraman and the author
of the book's foreword, Fumagalli has managed to capture people and places
never before seen in a book. Access to some of these sites has always been
off-limits to foreign photographers. The photographs in CUBA VA include the

volleyball team, glory of Cuban sports; the country's largest armed forces
training compound; and Alicia Alonso's School of Ballet, together with
research centers, universities, surgery rooms, steel factories, prisons,
psychiatric hospitals, agrarian cooperatives. And the typical Cuban
iconography, revisited. Roberto Fumagalli intimately explores Cuban society and its Revolución,
proposing a complete and original vision of the complex Cuban reality of
today, with its future challenges. "His images have wings and radiate a love of life. Fumagalli exhibits an
amazing mastery of capturing the right moment, a subtle grace in combining
shapes, textures and colors, and a curious clarity in distinguishing the
