当然和自己所处的现代主义时期相关，所以克利受到多重影响，印象派、后印象派、超现实主义、立体主义风格都有，尤其精彩的还有受德劳内影响的色块样式的抽象艺术，很有动感。克利是音乐家庭长大，所以受音乐影响很深，本人又是诗人，所以可谓诗、画、乐三通。1920年，Gropius邀请克利去包豪斯执教，直到1931年，这期间不仅和康定斯基谈笑风生，而且他试图把自己的艺术理论化，从灵感到理论，他又出了很多书。此外，他对于中东的艺术也有兴趣，去埃及、突尼斯旅游，受到伊斯兰艺术的影响，对画面的平面性、装饰性产生灵感，也有了新的文化符号注入作品。
