本书从社会学角度研究上座部佛教在南亚各地的发展史，把佛教文化与其他文化（如本土宗教、基督教）的碰撞写得饶有趣味，个人认为还是比较好读的。最大的缺点是篇幅不合理，虽然作者非常专业、叙述清晰，但无论如何关于教理/僧团演变的辨明和梳理的篇幅多达五分之三还是有些多了。其次，对僧团的日常生活的描写显得缺乏史料和例证，这本应是十分重要的部分。
