Bromwich's essays offer readings of individual poets, as well as comparisons between poets and their style. There is a look at the relationship between T.S. Eliot and Hart Crane and their work. Another essay takes a revealing look at W.H. Auden and traces the process by which the voice of a generation changed from prophet to domestic ironist. The essays attempt to make the reader think about what poetry is, and why it is still important.

没有读全，主要只看了提纲挈领的两篇和所有涉及Stevens的部分。没想到有这么难读，但妙处还是很多的，不过讲Stevens的那篇和别的文章比起来更像“论文”，看起来比较好懂，但还是吃不透，只能拾些边角料。前两篇反复咀嚼才渐渐明白了一些，很令人信服。"Yet we were looking away!"
