By means of his experimental designs, Masahiko Yendo analyses "liveable-in spacea under the changing and occasionally limiting conditions of todaya (TM)s global culture. In doing so, the architect, who, in 1989, won the "Sidney Katz Awarda for design, goes to the limits of what is technically possible, sometimes probing even further. Fascinating at the same time, Yendo finds, is the unavoidable decay of each and every product through its daily use and against the emblematic background of human needs and desires. For Yendo, architecture is, too, always a manifestation and instrument of individual and social transformation. This volume, edited by Lebbeus Woods, documents the last ten years of Yendoa (TM)s experimental work. Much of it is based on lectures hold at the Pratt Institute, New York, the University of Innsbruck, the Bartlett School of Architecture, London and the Southern Institute of Architecture (SCIARC) in Vico Morcote, Switzerland. The latest volume in the "RIEA book seriesa presents work of the New York based architect Masahiko Yendo. In addition to his work as architect and designer, Yendo is also active in the field of experimental architecture. The results, presented in numerous lectures, are, for the first time, compiled here in book form.
