李弘祺齣生於1945(民國34)年，畢業於國立臺灣大學歷史係(1968)。1969年負笈美國耶魯大學攻讀博士學位，1974年取得博士學位後，即前往香港中文大學任教。1991年齣任美國紐約市立大學城市學院歷史係教授兼亞洲研究課程主任。2001年起，齣任該大學研究院第一位東亞史博士指導教授。李弘祺於2003-2005年間應聘擔任國立臺灣大學講座教授，並齣任東亞文明研究中心主任。2006年七月起正式應聘為國立交通大學講座教授。

李弘祺的研究主要集中於中國教育史及思想史。著有《中國教育史英文著作評介》(2005)，The New and the Multiple, Sung Senses of the Past (2004), 《理性、學術與道德的知識傳統》(2004), 《麵嚮世界：現代性、歷史、與永恆的真理》(2002), Education in Traditional China, a History (2000), China and Europe, Images and Influences in Sixteen to Eighteenth Centuries (1991), 《讀史的樂趣》(1991), Government Education and Examinations in Sung China (1985),《西洋史學名著選》(1982) 等書。在中國、美國、德國、日本、意大利、香港及臺灣都有論文發錶。

李弘祺在學術界甚爲活躍，曾在哈佛大學、普林斯頓大學、史旦福大學、東京大學、慕尼黑大學等地演講或參加會議，推動各項研究計劃，並曾擔任國際歷史科學大會屬下的史學史及史學理論學會的執行委員（2000-2005）。現在則擔任東京大學“東亞海域文化交流及日本文明的發展”計劃(2005-2010)的國際顧問。
