保罗奥斯特说一句很重很有分量的话，也显得轻浮；麦克尤恩平淡的叙述中都有一种直指黑暗的力量。因为麦克尤恩珍惜自己的语言，对于所指与能指之间的距离拿捏得十分精准，他知道什么时候该言不及义，什么时候一语中的。而奥斯特的语言慢慢滑脱了控制，变成单纯的能指之间叙述游戏，所以少了动人的力量。
