繼承瞭Freedman基於宗族組織分析儀式意涵的方法論，反思Freedman認為中國人將祖先視為良善的觀點。Ahern認為中國人的祖先崇拜的動機是恐懼而不是敬愛，而這種恐懼來源於個體社會化過程中留下的對傢長的懲罰者形象的烙印，不同於Jack Goody對非洲人對祖先的恐懼的分析。後者認為財産繼承導緻個體負罪感，從而産生對死者的恐懼。
