兩個印象深刻的點，一是Knight對自己對其他作傢的苛刻評價的駁詰，二是書中讀者對Knight作品的庸俗解讀。這兩點加起來就成為瞭1939年納博科夫作品中難以排解的孤獨。慶幸他一直在堅持，他不曾為瞭迎閤大眾而放棄文字之美。那些對風格與題材戲仿，蝴蝶棋局寶石的意象，還有貫穿全文的shadow and shade都成為瞭超越時代的心領神會。
