第一次接觸有關奈保爾的記述，是那本少受關注的《維迪亞爵士的影子》，裏麵模模糊糊的構築一個對世界不滿的作傢——眾所周知，越是持這種世界觀，越受西方主流文化的贊賞。不過，奈保爾似乎有點意外，他的齣身與成長都是一個錯誤的巧閤，造就他雙重否定人格的同時，也讓他缺乏...

關於書名，譯者周成林先生“在極為精細的翻譯工作中，他認為《世事如斯》這一書名過於文雅，而奈保爾的文字以簡潔平白著稱，因此《世事如此》更切閤傳主的人生及其文字風格。” ——我猜測，編輯選擇“如斯”的原因大概是：“世事”這個詞也文雅。如果譯者想搭配“簡潔平白”...

奈保爾傳記書名裏的“The World is What it is”中文翻譯為“世事如斯”，這個“斯”看起來無所指，孔子的那句“逝者如斯夫”，前麵有“子在川上曰”，所以“斯”說的是“川”，而“世事如斯”的“斯”，初讀，就不知道“斯”究竟所指者何瞭。 看英文，大體明白，世事就是它所...
