Zheng Da's biography is meticulously researched and admirable for its empathetic approach in chronicling Chiang Yee's life. It was most interesting to follow the several friendships that were of great importance in sustaining Chiang over his peripatetic life and literary career. Unfortunately, Zheng does less well with situating Chiang in the proper historical context while maintaining a critical distance from his subject. A few more illustrations, as they were so central to Chiang's life work, would have also been helpful.
