This work reviews research on the changing priorities of museums and describes and analyses the strengths of five volunteer programmes in Canada and the USA. The book reports on the findings of five volunteer programmes set up and managed by the authors in the Science Museum, London and examines the development of these and the subsequent establishment of a permanent volunteer programme there.
