Entrepreneurial support systems are the institutions, knowledge systems, and strategies that nurture and create entrepreneurs and new ventures. At their best, they provide powerful links among individuals, organizations, and communities, contributing to economic development and growth. The forces of globalization are creating new opportunities for entrepreneurs; at the same time, they are increasing the urgency to establish conditions that are conducive to entrepreneurship. In this book, the authors describe such support systems as business incubators, investor networks, strong intellectual property and contract law systems, university technology commercialization programs, and education and mentorship for entrepreneurs. But they note that there are considerable gaps, especially in comparing "developed" vs. "developing" countries, which often lack formal institutions.
