"What is water?" Is it a form of matter that can be defined in scientific terms, that is, molecules consisting of oxygen and hydrogen atoms? Can it be defined in its aggregate state as "liquid" within the four elements that have come down to us from antiquity: "Earth, Air, Fire and Water"? Or is it the totality of all that we link with the seas, the rivers and lakes or the weather on our planet - the life-giving element, whose force can be turned into the opposite and destroy life? How relevant these questions are is shown by the presence of the subject in the media - in the form of disturbing news of the polar icecaps melting and the rise of sea level, of droughts and floods or the scarcity of drinking water in many regions of the earth.
How are we to understand at all the phenomenon that is water? WATER / WASSER, the second volume of the "Four Elements Series" from ARNOLDSCHE following the very successful book AIR / LUFT and just off the press, addresses this question. In it, Oliver Herwig and Axel Thallemer have collected various definitions and approaches via the aspect of a simultaneous view of explanatory scientific paradigms (for instance, the chemical, physical or thermodynamic properties of water) as well as a discussion of the diverse artistic and cultural facets of this element. The interaction of water with our Lebensraum on earth is at stake; this medium so crucial to our existence is approached via religion, philosophy and art. The author team deliberately eschew simple answers. On the contrary, their aim - as in AIR / LUFT - is replacing the conventional, unilaterally scientifically and technically formulated concept of water with an overview that also includes approaching the subject from the artistic and cultural angles.
In more than 700 colour illustrations and nearly 300 pages, an arc spans areas of knowledge and specialist disciplines that are otherwise treated as separate fields. Readers are treated to art and science being handled on an equal footing in a new and unusual way of looking at water as an element.
