In 1958, Lazarus gave himself the challenging task of finding and photographing the best artists in New York. His timing was perfect. At its postwar height in the late fifties, the New York art scene included Milton Avery, Adolph Gottlieb, Franz Kline, Willem de Kooning, Robert Motherwell, Louise Nevelson, Barnett Newman, the young Ellsworth Kelly and Jasper Johns, and dozens of others captured by Lazarus on his four-year adventure.On his journey through the studios and galleries of New York, Lazarus kept a detailed diary, published here for the first time. On their own, these unpublished photographs of dozens of artists now in the twentieth-century pantheon would be a major discovery.
