很好的一本介绍近现代Southeast Asian Buddhism 的书。作者在里面批判了传统的现代性理论。这种理论认为老挝和北泰国的佛教在19世纪末20世纪初的“现代转向”得益于外部力量的介入（法国殖民势力、泰国国王的改革等等），但事实是外部力量仅仅是一个躯壳，内部的写经讲经模式（即"gathering leaves and lifting words"）其实并未改变，只是以不同的形式展现了出来。佛教研究中“传统/现代”的dichotomy是大问题，值得反思。
