This is a collection of revealing interviews with the former LeRoi Jones, a leading figure in the world-wide black liberation movement, and poet, playwright, fiction writer and essayist. Included are interviews conducted by Maya Angelou and David Frost, plus a new interview granted to the editor. The text provides an insight into African-American literature, as well as into the turmoil and passions of the "black experience" during the second half of the 20th century. The interviews cover Baraka's ghetto life in the 1940s; his career from university and USAF in the early 1950s to Greenwich Village "beatnik"; the riots and radicalism of the '60s; black nationalism in the 1970s; Marxist-Leninism through the 1980s; and his stream of impassioned writing throughout each of these eras.
