居斯达夫·福楼拜是19世纪中叶法国重要的批判现实主义作家，1821年12月17日出生在鲁昂一个著名的外科医生家庭。其作品反映了1848－1871年间法国的时代风貌，揭露了丑恶鄙俗的资产阶级社会。

1840年福楼拜赴巴黎攻读法律，因患神经系统的疾病于1843年秋辍学。在巴黎，他结识了另一位大文豪雨果。1846年他认识了女诗人路易丝·高莱，两人有将近十年的交往。1846年父亲去世后，他在鲁昂附近的克罗瓦塞别墅定居，埋头于文学创作，除偶尔到巴黎拜会一下文艺界的朋友外，在那里独身终其一生。

19世纪五、六十年代，他完成了三部主要作品：《包法利夫人》、《萨朗波》和《情感教育》，轰动了当时的法国文坛。
