The U.S. consumes 140 billion gallons of gasoline per year; 50 million acres of switchgrass (approximately the acreage of the US soil bank) could produce enough ethanol to meet all of our fuel requirements. Switchgrass once fed tens of millions of buffalo; tomorrow it could fuel tens of millions of cars. America can drain Alaska dry and dot our coastlines with oil rigs, but we can't drill our way out of the oil mess. The Middle-East is a Mare's Nest.
