"The Constant Art of Being a Writer" is divided into three sections - The Life, the Work, and the Business - and covers all the crucial aspects of writing and publishing. In addition to addressing such core elements as idea generation, and plot and character development, the book explores more nuanced topics like language, mood and tone black comedic moments, magic realism and more. The business portion of the book looks at doing one's own public relations, using digital media, building a promotional website, finding a supportive writing community (live and/or online). In addition, the section includes information about what to expect after the book is sold, including a basic timeline that traces a work from manuscript to shelf. Some of the chapters feature short interviews with other writers, such as a discussion on language with successful short story writer Aimee Bender, thus exposing readers to additional view points and approaches. The book also includes exercise sections throughout to help writers hone their skills.
