Randall Collins challenges this view in "Violence", arguing that violent confrontation goes against human physiological hardwiring. It is the exception, not the rule - regardless of the underlying conditions or motivations. Collins gives a comprehensive explanation of violence and its dynamics, drawing upon video footage, cutting-edge forensics, and ethnography to examine violent situations up close as they actually happen - and his conclusions will surprise you. Violence comes neither easily nor automatically. Antagonists are by nature tense and fearful, and their confrontational anxieties put up a powerful emotional barrier against violence. Collins guides readers into the very real and disturbing worlds of human discord - from domestic abuse and schoolyard bullying to muggings, violent sports, and armed conflicts. He reveals how the fog of war pervades all violent encounters, limiting people mostly to bluster and bluff, and making violence, when it does occur, largely incompetent, often injuring someone other than its intended target. 终于在Randy退休前翻完了，今年六月出版，我可以厚颜无耻跟他说这本书的中文版是送给他的退休礼物了。。。

非常非常的有趣：我一直觉得现在关于暴力的量化研究一个很大的瓶颈在于对于发生在很短时间段（一个月之内）的事件基本没法解释——由于各种原因，自变量大多是以年为单位的；不仅解释微观机制变得很难，而且几乎不可能分析出在事件密集发生时候不同类型暴力的不同逻辑／机制。而暴力事件的发生偏偏又是高度burst，往往都在一月之内，甚至几天之间

其实只读了第五章bullying mugging holdups，但应该不会把全书读完了，等哪天找中文版再翻翻。例子太多，碎碎杂杂的，好处是内容简单读得快。以及果然微观，用人际互动解读暴力，如果能和更宏观的讨论结合就好了，然而不太可能吧
