This is a facsimile edition of Kaempfer's classic 3 volume work on Japanese History. Written in the 17th century, it was for a long time required reading for all students of Japanese studies. This English language edition, translated by J.G. Scheuchzer under royal patronage, was first published in 1906. It includes an account of Kaempfer's preliminary voyage from Batavia to Siam, and from thence to Japan, together with a short description of the Kingdom of Siam. It still remains a valuable work for students of both the Tokugawa period, and of western historiography of Japan. This work includes a preface by the author, a chapter on the life of the author written by the translator, and an introduction by the translator.
