post-hypnotic examines the resurgence of pronounced optical effects in the work of 28 painters living in the U.S., Switzerland, England, and Japan. Since the 1980s, numerous artists have revisited Op phenomena involving pulsating patterns, afterimages, vibrating illusionistic space, and other sensations often associated with altered states. This book will offer the first comprehensive view and critical assessment of optical phenomena in the 1980s and 1990s. Curator Barry Blinderman and artist/critic Tom Moody trace Op from its quasi-scientific origins in the 60s through its so-called deconstruction in the 80s to its present incarnation. Peter Halley contributes an interview updating his essay on Ross Bleckner and Op, "Painting at the End of History." Among the artists included are: Ross Bleckner, Peter Halley, Bruce Pearson, Philip Taaffe, John Armleder, and Yayoi Kusama.
