Most studies of the alleged problems of boys and literacy centre on initial education. Drawing on recent research on masculinity, Masculinities in Text and Teaching addresses the gendering of English Studies within higher education. In exploring the history and educational practices of what has been widely characterised as a 'soft' subject, the book raises disturbing questions about the nature and negotiation of male symbolic power in a subject group where the large majority of students are, in fact, female. Masculinities in Text and Teaching seeks to bridge the conventional distinction between textual theory and criticism on the one hand and pedagogic research on the other. In drawing together the study of text and narrative with insight into the actual experience of the classroom, this book will be valuable both to teachers of English Studies and to their students.
