In a sequel to his Critique of Modernity, French social scholar Alain Touraine questions the social and cultural content of democracy today. Touraine argues that if democracy is to survive in the postcommunist world, we must move away from particularity and reconcile state power with transnational capital, social diversity with social unity, individual liberty with integration; otherwise, we will one day find ourselves without the means to protect the very values we believe we are fighting to uphold.
