About the Author
This book has been produced in collaboration with Audubon, whose mission is to conserve and restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds, other wildlife, and their habitats.
The text and maps for the species entries in this book have been provided by BirdLife International, a global partnership of conservation organizations that strives to conserve birds, their habitats, and global biodiversity. BirdLife partners operate in more than 100 countries and territories worldwide. The organization has more than 4,000 staff and over 2,500,000 members worldwide. Together, the BirdLife Partnership forms the leading authority on the status of birds, their habitats, and the issues and problems affecting them. Its aims include preventing the extinction of any bird species, maintaining and where possible improving the conservation status of all bird species, and conserving, improving and enlarging sites and habitats important for birds.
The Introduction and Habitat sections have been written by David Burnie. David studied zoology at the University of Bristol, England. After graduating, he worked as a nature reserve ranger and biologist, and in 1979 began a career writing and editing books on natural sciences. He has written, or contributed to, over 75 books and multimedia titles. He was the Editor in Chief of DK's Animal and a contributor to Earth and Ocean. He has also acted as a consultant and scriptwriter for a number of natural history television programs, such as Survival School (BBC Wildvision) and Wild Islands (Performance Films).
