Investigation of lies deception and suspicion reveal an unexpected twist. Detectives Dowding and Dillon investigate the murder of a young house keeper on the estate of Willowby Grantham a Member of Parliament on the outskirts of the village of Pebblestone. Their investigation leads them to identical twins, an equestrian challenge and an encounter with a family of Romany Gypsies, followed by extensive questioning of a motor cycling chapter called the Black Angels with a surprising membership before they solve the crime.
