中世纪研究牛津学派最后的丰碑，对于中古盛期神学系统化的分析非常精道，虽然处理的都是常见的大人物，但在叙述中呈现出来的立体感却实在令别人望尘莫及。很可惜后面关于神学转型后之于社会的影响所述较少，终究是未完成的遗著。当今之世，能如此体大精深，且内功纯正之中古学者，恐怕没有谁能继续这类题目的如此规模的研究了。
