The policy differences arise, this book explains, from differences within each country in the relationship between private banks and industrial corporations, on the one hand, and in the independence of the national central bank, on the other.

'Currencies and Politics' is the first comprehensive, in-depth comparison of the institutions and processes that formulate domestic and external monetary policy in the United States, Germany, and Japan. This volume outlines the differences in policymaking among the three countries and the policy patterns they produced over the postwar period. The author proposes specific reforms of national institutions and policy processes that can improve policy performance and international cooperation.
