牛頓（紐特）·阿蒂米斯·菲多·斯卡曼生於1897年。在他母親的鼓勵和支持下，他對神奇動物産生瞭興趣。他母親曾對飼養品種珍奇的鷹頭馬身有翼獸充滿熱情。從霍格沃茨魔法學校畢業之後，斯卡曼先生進入魔法部，在神奇生物管理控製司工作。他先在傢養小精靈重新安置辦公室待瞭兩年，他稱這兩年是“枯燥之極”的兩年，隨後被調到瞭動物所。斯卡曼具有豐富的關於神奇怪獸的知識，因此他在動物所提升很快。

1947年，差不多由他一手成立瞭狼人登記處，不過，他說他最引以為豪的還是1965年獲得通過的那道《禁止為實驗目的而喂養》的禁令。這道禁令有效地遏止瞭不列顛境內創造新的不可馴服的動物的盛行。斯卡曼先生曾在火龍研究與限製局工作，有很多機會遠涉異域。在這期間，他為他這部暢銷世界的作品《神奇的動物在哪裏》收集瞭大量資料，現在這本書已經是第五十二版瞭。

由於紐特·斯卡曼對神奇動物研究即神奇動物學方麵的貢獻，他在1979年被授予梅林爵士團二級主人魔法師的稱號。斯卡曼先生現在已經退休，和他的妻子波樂蓬蒂娜以及他的三隻寵物貓狸子：霍比、米麗和莫勒生活在英國多塞特郡。
