惊心动魄，读来欲罢不能。但人名太多，人之间关系也复杂，人名间或重复，要以一世二世区分，要不断复习才不致糊涂，又加之生词太多，每天可读15页左右，2007年英语专业八级考试的阅读由此书选过Rechard I很长一部分。另，所读为1956年之布面精装毛边版本，字体适中，印刷清晰。
