坎里克·方纳(Eric Foner) 是美国哥伦比亚大学德威特·克林顿历史学讲座教授，当代美国最有影响力的历史学家之一。自1970年发表《自由土地、自由劳动、自由人：内战前共和党的意识形态》起，方纳在美国内战史、重建史、非裔美国人史、政治文化史等领域内著述甚丰，成就斐然。其重要著作包括：《汤姆．潘恩与革命时期的美国》(1976)、《美国内战时代的政治与意识形态》(1980)、《除了自由一无所有：黑人解放及其遗产》(1983)、《重建：美利坚未完成的革命(1863一l877)》(1988，该书获得象征美国史学界最高荣誉的班克罗夫特奖和其他学术大奖)、《美国自由的故事》(1998)和《谁拥有历史：在变化的世界中重新思考过去》(2002)。方纳是美国艺术与科学院院士和英国皇家科学院通讯院士，并分别在1993年和2000年当选为美国历史学家组织(OAH)和美国历史学会(AHA)的主席。方纳教授曾先后在牛津大学、剑桥大学、莫斯科大学、希伯来大学等世界著名大学担任美国史讲座教授，并荣获过哥伦比亚大学的“伟大教师”的称号。他的最新著作是《烈火中的考验：亚伯拉罕．林肯与美国奴隶制》(2010)。

my liberty is given by lib.gen. the text is over 1000 pages long, but still, i cannot remember much after my reading. only one thing is certain, the definition of liberty and freedom are constantly changing. I am curious what will happen in the trump chapter.

本科阶段苦读英美历史及文学，三年下来，别的书都扔掉了，唯有这一本重达好几斤的书被我一路背到了巴黎。这是作为历史课本的读物，我们学习的只是部分章节。那个时候看起来苦涩枯燥，似乎永远看不完。那天看到在美国的朋友苦读原版书才想起这本来。没有了考试的压力，再看才觉出好来。那么多的笔记，批注，划重点，看得突然很怀念。
